Advanced Elements Archives

The Advanced Elements AirFusion Kayak is not totally an inflatable kayak. Due to the aluminum frames it is more half rigid frame and half inflatable. It has been designed to be a serious rival to a skin-on-frame kayak in handling and speed. It incorporates a unique design of pressurized air tubes and aluminum alloy frame poles. The resultant design in a rigid frame kayak of extremely high performance.

Advanced Elements AirFusion Kayak

Specifications:

Length     13 feet
Width     25 inches
Weight     32 lbs

The Advanced Elements AirFusion Kayak can still be classed as an inflatable, but due to the aluminum poles, that make up an extremely rigid frame, the AirFusion acts very much like a hard-shell kayak when being paddled.

Pros:

  • The combination of rigid aluminum poles and high-pressure air tubes results in a kayak with a high performance.
  • The AirFusion kayak has quite a narrow beam, when compared with other kayaks. This results in a kayak that is extremely responsive, that really excels on quiet waters such as lakes, gentle rivers and bays.
  • The skin is made of a triple-layer polyester material with double PVC coating. This material combined with welded seams ensure long life and excellent puncture resistance.
  • Access to the bow and stern through zippered access aides in the set up and entry into the storage areas.
  • An inflatable cockpit coaming gives easy attachment of optional spray skirt.
  • Large well padded seat for optimal comfort on long trips.
  • Boston Twistlok valves, compatible with most inflation pumps.

Cons:

  • Due to the aluminum poles, it is more cumbersome to take travelling. There is a longer set up time, when compared with other inflatable kayaks.
  • Due to the lightness of the kayak and the absence of a tracking aid such as a skeg or rudder, the tracking is a little difficult especially in conditions of high wind.
  • The fact that the AirFusion Kayak has a narrow beam, the stability is not as good as most inflatable

With everything taken into consideration the Advanced Elements AirFusion Kayak is an excellent addition to the Advanced Elements range. The upgraded performance of this kayak, if a little dampened by the lack of tracking help, cannot be understated. Also, the sleek lines of this kayak, and they are very nice, sleek lines, will ensure this will grace any water way.

User Reviews:

Most of the reviews I have read pretty much all agree and I must say, rave about the performance, for example “I have to admit it is more fun to paddle than any other kayak I have enjoyed. By comparison, other inflatables and hard-shells now seem rather routine.”

There doesn’t seem to be any problems with transporting it, even with the aluminum poles. The extreme lightness makes carrying it no problem at all.

There are some negative comments about the amount of room to carry spare gear, however, I think this is more down to the fact this is not an expedition kayak and is designed more for manoeuverability, also some say that putting the aluminum frame together and taking apart once you have finished is a nightmare, but this is in the minority. Most say it is no problem or gets much easier with practice.

Most reviews say they absolutely love this kayak and would definitely recommend it to a friend.

The AdvancedFrame Kayak

The AdvancedFrame Kayak can handle up class III rapids, however, be aware that if you are not very competant at kayaking, then it is easy to swamp the kayak and fill it up with water. although there is no danger of the kayak sinking, it will have to be emptied. Without a pump this can be a bit of a chore, as the kayak will bend with the weight of water in the kayak.

Pros.

  • Due to its 34in beam the AdvancedFrame Kayak is very stable.
  • It tracks very well, as well as an equally priced hard-shell. This means that you won’t have to struggle to keep a straight line, so you can enjoy paddling easily and calmly. It is also very manoeuvrable.
  • It is extremely quick and easy to inflate and deflate, saving time so you have more time on the water.
  • As with all inflatable kayaks, the AdvancedFrame Kayak is extremely compact when folded up. This means that it takes up little space and can be stored even under your bed. Transporting the kayak is also a breeze. You can even take it as luggage on an aeroplane.
  • It has a durable triple-layer polyester material skin with double PVC coating, offering superb puncture resistance; welded seams ensure long life. This robust skin ensures that any bumps and scrapes are shrugged off with ease.

Cons:

  • The length of the AdvancedFrame Kayak, at 10ft 5in, means that there is limited space to carry gear for long periods away.

Note: As this is true, bear in mind that it is not intended as an expedition or touring kayak.

  • No foot rests.
  • Be aware that not all pumps will fit the spring and twistlok valves. So ensure you have the correct pump before you set out on a kayaking trip.

  • Extremely stable, even a novice will find it hard to tip over. This can only increase the enjoyment of being out on the water.

The AdvancedFrame Convertible Kayak

The Advanced Frame Convertible Kayak really is exceptional, it is light enough to be checked onto an aeroplane, or thrown into the trunk of your car along with your gear for a weekend away.

The main Pro’s

  • Obviously, storage and carriage are the ones that come instantly to mind.
  • Quick to set up, using a double action hand pump – which is an extra item that needs to be bought – it takes no more than 20 minutes from getting it out of the trunk, to launching it into the water. With experience this time will be reduced quite significantly.
  • There is plenty of space for two large adults, and if the double deck is not used then two small children can also fit in with ease; however, this will decrease the amount of storage space for your gear.
  • The AdvancedFrame Convertible Kayak is an extremely stable kayak. Unlike traditional hard shell kayaks, inflatable kayaks are very difficult to tip over. While it is possible, you need to work at it. The reason being, inflatable kayaks have a flat bottom, making them very stable.
  • It tracks very well, Maintaining straight lines whilst paddling isn’t too difficult, also due to it’s low profile in the water the windage is kept to a minimum, although there will be some effect but not so bad it can’t be overcome.
  • Equally responsive solo or in tandem.

A few Cons:

  • It is quite a lengthy and difficult process to completely dry out the kayak, but not impossible.
  • Re-Packing the Kayak back into the carry bag whilst wet is a bit difficult, One solution is to fold it up wet, then once you have the time to dry it out properly, then you can pack it into the bag. Still a bit of an effort, but achievable.

Summary:

Overall the AdvancedFrame Convertible Kayak is an excellent piece of kit. Whereas it isn’t up to the standard of a hard case Kayak, it performs very well up to its limits.

It is easily stored and carried, quick to set up and take down, stable and tracks well.

Ideal for couples, or small families with young children, or if you want the capacity to paddle solo or tandem.
